What Michigan Homeowners Say After The Check Clears

If something happens to your home and you need to file an insurance claim, calling ICA will be one of the best decisions you can make. The second story of my home was completely gutted by a fire. I knew the insurance claim process was going to be a long and stressful one, but I never expected the insurance company to make things as difficult as they did. That’s when I decided to call Aaron at Insurance Claims Assistance. After agreeing to the terms and signing the contract, Aaron took care of everything. He handled the phone calls, negotiations, and communication with the insurance company, and he kept me updated every step of the way. I never felt like I had to worry about what was happening or what needed to be done. Most importantly, Aaron was able to negotiate a significantly larger settlement than what the insurance company initially offered. His professionalism, knowledge, and dedication made an incredibly difficult situation much easier for me and my family. I honestly don’t see any reason to go through an insurance claim like this on your own. If you find yourself dealing with a major loss or a difficult insurance claim, I highly recommend giving Aaron and Insurance Claims Assistance a call. They will work tirelessly on your behalf to make sure you receive what you are entitled to and help get your home and life back to normal—or even better than before.

Aaron is great to work with! I've used him twice for claims and highly recommend speaking with ICA before you contact your insurance company if you need to make a claim. ICA was very thorough about what was covered under my policy and made sure I was reimbursed for every penny. My insurance company is a good company, but I am confident their adjuster would not have identified everything I was entitled to the way ICA did.

I’ve used Aaron and his team in the past during a terrible loss and he made things easy and seamless. Very professional and thorough. During a tough time like property loss, Aaron is exactly what you need to remove the stress and help you through the process. Highly recommend.

Dealing with a basement water loss is one of the most stressful, overwhelming experiences a homeowner can face. The damage, the uncertainty about coverage, the endless paperwork, adjusting, contractors, and the constant worry about what comes next can feel crushing. Aaron and his team at ICA completely changed that for us. From the moment we reached out, they stepped in with calm expertise and genuine care. They guided us through every step of the claims process, explained what we needed to document, helped communicate with the insurance company, and advocated on our behalf so we didn’t have to carry the full weight alone. What could have been months of frustration and second-guessing instead became a structured, manageable process. Their team turned one of the worst situations we’ve experienced as homeowners into something that actually felt positive — we felt supported, informed, and protected the entire way. If you’re facing a water damage claim (or any insurance claim that feels overwhelming), I can’t recommend ICA highly enough. They don’t just assist with the paperwork — they restore a sense of control and peace of mind when you need it most. Truly grateful for their help.

The team at ICA was great!! I’m out of state but my mother’s home is in Michigan. She had a big water loss and I couldn’t come back and forth for the claim. Aaron and his team at ICA did amazing. They kept me updated throughout, and the final settlement they got us was waaaaay more than I expected. Job well done guys. If anybody is out of state with rentals or family…Call ICA to handle it! They took all the stress away and got an amazing final settlement so we could get my moms home put back. Thx ICA!!

What Is A Public Adjuster?

The adjuster your insurance company sends works for them. We work for you.

The insurer's adjuster You, on your own ICA
Who pays them Your insurance company Nobody – it's your weekend A percentage of your settlement. Nothing upfront.
Who they answer to Their employer. Not you. You You. Legally. It's the entire job.
Who reads the policy They do – and they know the exclusions cold You. All 40 pages of it. We do, line by line, before we touch anything else.
Who documents the loss They write the estimate You, against their estimate We re-document it independently – including what you can't see.
Who wins if you're underpaid Them Nobody Nobody – we're only paid out of what's recovered.
Right After The Loss

What should you do in the first 48 hours after a house fire in Michigan?

Get everyone safe and housed, secure the property, and don't sign anything final until your policy has been read.

  1. Get everyone safe, then find a place to stay. Keep every receipt for hotels, meals and essentials. Additional living expenses are often covered.
  2. Get the fire report. Ask the fire department for the report and the incident number.
  3. Secure the property. Board-up and tarping protect against further damage and are usually part of the claim. Keep the invoices.
  4. Document every room. Photos and video before anything is thrown out, including smoke and soot in rooms the fire never reached.
  5. Report it and get your full policy. Ask for a certified copy of the complete policy, including the declarations page.
  6. Don't sign a release yet. Don't accept a final number before someone in your corner has read the policy and checked it against the full loss.
Where The Money Goes Missing

What gets missed in fire damage claims?

Fire claims are underpaid in the places that are hardest to see: smoke, contents, and the cost of living somewhere else. Your insurance company's adjuster works for them. You can hire your own.

Smoke in rooms the fire never touched

Soot and odor get into drywall, insulation, closets and belongings all through the house.

HVAC and ductwork

Smoke moves through the system. Cleaning or replacing it belongs in the estimate.

Contents

Every room's belongings need to be inventoried. A rushed list leaves things out, and what isn't listed isn't paid.

Additional living expenses

Hotel or rent, meals and mileage while the home is being rebuilt.

Code upgrades

Rebuilding to current code (wiring, insulation, egress) may be covered under ordinance or law coverage.

Water from putting it out

The water used to put the fire out is part of the same loss, and it does its own damage.

Turning Disasters Into Unexpected Blessings.

A loss can be the chance to rebuild – if the settlement is right. Find out for free.

The Questions People Actually Ask

Straight Answers

What does homeowners insurance cover after a house fire? +

Typically the structure, your belongings, and additional living expenses while you're out of the home, each with its own limit. Smoke damage and the water used to put the fire out are part of the same loss.

Is smoke damage covered if the fire was only in one room? +

Generally, yes. Smoke and soot travel through the house and the HVAC system, and that damage is part of the claim. It's also one of the most undercounted parts.

Can I hire my own adjuster after a house fire? +

Yes. The adjuster your insurance company sends works for them. A public adjuster works for you: we read the policy, document the loss and handle the back-and-forth. Make sure whoever you hire is licensed in Michigan and uses the state-approved contract.

Should I accept the first offer after a fire? +

Not before someone has checked it against your policy and the full loss. Once you sign a final release and cash the check, it's very hard to reopen. Watch the deadlines too: in Michigan you generally have at least 1 year from the loss to sue your insurer, with the clock paused while the claim is open.

What if I disagree with the insurance company's number? +

Michigan property policies include an appraisal process. Either side can demand it in writing, each picks an appraiser, and a judge can name the tiebreaker if they can't agree. It's often faster than a lawsuit, and it's one of the tools we use when a fair number won't come any other way.

How long does my insurance company have to pay in Michigan? +

Michigan law gives insurers deadlines. Within 30 days of your claim they have to tell you in writing what proof of loss they need. If they don't pay within 60 days of getting satisfactory proof of loss, they owe you 12% interest on top.

What do you charge? +

Up to 10% of your settlement – 10% is the max, never more. Nothing upfront, and nothing at all if we don't recover for you.
